Genzyme Corporation

When Genzyme decided to build its new headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the multinational biotech firm set lofty goals. The new building had to reflect the company's core beliefs in innovation, transparency and collaboration. It had to give employees a high level of control over personal space. And, it was to be the most environmentally responsible large-scale commercial building in the country.

Van Andel Research Institute  

When the Van Andel Research Institute came to Steelcase to design lab benches for its 160,000-square-foot facility, Steelcase collaborated closely with architects, designers and scientists to deliver a timeless solution to a persistent problem: To keep pace with rapidly changing needs, the research labs would need to be redesigned every four years, with typical down times of two to six weeks for each reconfiguration. Lab benches had to support heavy test equipment and sustain vibrations.
